Abstract
The product architecture describes the allocation of product functions to
physical components including their interactions. Within the design process, the
designer is called to determine the product architecture, for instance, by implementing
a specific function into a separated module or by integrating it with
others. These decisions have a great impact on the success factors of the company
as customer satisfaction, efficiency and strategy. To support the architecture
design, various methods exist. However, set up with a specific purpose
(“Design for X”), these methods often focus on the support of the design of
particular architectures. The aim of this contribution is to show that potentials
of different architectures principles (e.g. integrated vs. modular) should be considered
collectively. A comprehensive approach is introduced, which proposes
a target model and principles for the product architecture design on different
maturity levels of the solution of the product development.
