Abstract
This paper is of interest to individuals exploring the concept of an interdisciplinary approach in design. It attempts to investigate and understand the cultural dimensions of the collaborative process of the interdisciplinary design approach in two areas: a) the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to design through reviewing case studies from a research initiative in the UK, “Designing for the 21st Century”; and b) the influence of cultural dimensions on the collaborative process using Hofstede's model of culture. Through the literature review, it is found that communication is the key tool to the success in interdisciplinary teamwork. This paper provides insights and potential outcomes of an interdisciplinary approach to design research.
